Window Security Locks: Your First Defense Against Burglary

Window security locks are your first defense against burglary. Today, you have to ensure that your home and/or business is safe from intruders, probably more than ever before. The economy is weak and so, crime is up. This said, criminals will try to break into your home or business through its easiest means -windows. It only makes sense that your locks should be as strong as possible.

Read on to learn how you can make sure your existing window security locks are up to par, and if not, how to find ones that will truly defend your home or business against intrusion.

Inspect Your Windows

The first step in making sure your windows are as secure against burglary as possible is to inspect your window. Are they cracked or are the locks rusted or worn? Is the wood around the window solid and not rotting? All of these variables are key in determining the safety of your home and whether or not to upgrade your window security.

Inspect Your Window Locks

There is often a huge difference between the window locks that were installed when your house was constructed and the products referred to as "window locks security". Unless you have installed new windows recently, and asked for highly secure window locks, you are likely to just have locks that lock your window in place. These are not enough to discourage an intruder. For ultimate window locks security, your locks should be made of heavy duty iron or something comparable, large so the prospective intruder can see them, and possibly key operated.

Security Locks Window Options

Depending on how elaborate you want to get with your window home security, you could choose to enlist a security company or stop down to your local hardware store to purchase and install your own locks. In either even, you should know the basic kinds of security locks for window security that exist. The most effective for preventing window entry are:

Fanlight Locks: these locks are often metal and have a bolted latch for opening and closing the window. Key Operated Locks: these types of locks are as you might expect-operated to lock by key access. If you choose this option, make sure that you store your key in a secure place-since this security requires two step precaution.

Other Options to Consider

While window locks window security is a great start to your home or business' safety, you should also be considering other options to fully bolster your home's security, and safeguard you and your family from intrusion. Two other great ways to stop the intruder in his/her tracks are window bars/grille/gates and window security film. The former are often tamper-resistant bars placed on the outside of your window, so that even if they break your window, they cannot get through the bars or gate. The latter is a thin, clear, heavy duty plastic shield placed on the pane itself, which prevents your window from shattering or breaking, so that an intruder cannot enter through the window. These are good options to consider when purchasing window security locks, as add-ons.

Am I Too Old to Take Up Surfing?

Until a few years ago I would probably have answered yes had anyone over the age of 60 asked my opinion. Being the south side of 30 I thought it was something that you either started young or at least should have given a go come middle age.

All that changed however when my surf buddy Kate informed me that her dad had decided to take up the sport at the ripe old age 64. Now, a few years down the line, he is an avid silver-haired surfer who can give anyone a run for their money. Here is his story.

A leap into the unknown

Given Mike's background, it would have been hard to believe that he would one day become a surfer. A bank manager who rarely ventured from his desk, Mike had been happily married to his wife, Susan, for over 30 years, with whom he also had a younger son, Tyler.

A knee injury while playing football in his youth had relegated him to the sidelines long ago, so he had never dreamed of doing anything more physically strenuous than his daily brisk walk along the beach.

Although Kate knew her father to be relatively fit, if not tremendously active, it came as some surprise when one Sunday morning 3 years ago Mike asked her opinion on whether he should give this "surfing stuff" a try. She told him that he had nothing to lose by giving it a go at least once.

So, at her insistence and with some additional prodding from his family and friends, Mike worked up the courage to venture out into the waves one unseasonal May morning with Kate alongside.

That first ride experience

As they stood on the shores of Daytona Beach, Florida on that overcast, unusually crisp morning 3 years ago, Kate recalls that Mike had been apprehensive at first. "Come on, Dad," she coaxed. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You won't regret it. I promise."

Naturally, Mike considers his first ride an unforgettable moment in his life. His initial attempts were, literally, shaky. After a few hours spent simply trying to stay on his board, followed by the inevitable, yet nonetheless disheartening wipe-outs, Mike was beginning to wonder if his decision to brave the cold had been a foolish one. Despite his frustration, however, each gradually longer pop up and balance was evidence that Mike was not a hopeless case after all.

In fact, at long last, Mike began to notice a change in his body's command of the board as his brain began to seemingly rewire itself.

As Mike explains it, "It was as if my mind gradually became totally in sync with the rhythm of the waves and the feeling of the board under my feet so that everything else around me was blocked out. All that existed was the board and the waves. It was incredible."

A love of surfing takes hold

Given this eventual transformation, it is unsurprising that Mike has grown from a stiff and scared rider to a much more sprightly, experienced, and dedicated surfer. The family now go on surfing holidays together and Mike spends even more time in the water than Kate can manage these days. "I feel more fit now than I did 30 years ago," he says. "It's a fun way for anyone at any age to stay active."

It's pretty clear from Mike's enthusiasm that he has not regretted his decision to try surfing for a single moment. He is the perfect example of someone who defies the assumption that you are ever too old to start surfing. With the right attitude, you can never be too old or too young to surf. Indeed, as Mike puts it, so long as he keeps surfing he may never feel his age again!

Radiant Heat: Understanding Solar Energy

Solar energy is regarded to be the ultimate when it comes to renewable energy. In turn, renewable energy is a kind of energy that comes from a resource that can naturally replenish itself. But while the term solar energy may seem self-explanatory, it's actually not as simple as it sounds.

For instance, many think that this kind of energy is the heat coming from the Sun. However, Earth doesn't really receive heat from the Sun; or, at least, not directly. What the planet gets is solar radiation-exactly 174 petawatts of it (a petawatt is four levels above the kilowatt). Why people perceive this energy as heat is because the Earth's surface, the atmosphere, the oceans, and basically every object in the planet absorb this solar radiation. Absorbing this radiation causes their temperature to rise, hence the heat.

It is this radiation that is converted into solar power, the energy used as a substitute to electricity and non-renewable resources.

But solar energy does not automatically translate to solar power; in fact, it is only one application of this energy source.

One less advance usage of solar radiation is passive energy gain. As the term itself suggests, this is a procedure that uses an energy source (in this case, sunlight or solar radiation) without the assistance of mechanical equipment. Since sunlight in itself is radiation, it can be used without having the need to convert it into a usable energy.

By taking advantage of the climate and architectural design, a household, for example, can use natural sunlight for water heating and solar cooking-activities that use consumable energy.

Obviously, the problem with passive energy gain is lack of control. Since one will utilize the energy as it is, the user will have to work around elements such as weather or time. Using active energy technologies as such solar chimneys or panels can help users maximize control over the energy and its effectiveness.

Solar power comes in the picture when solar energy is converted into electricity directly or indirectly. Directly, radiant heat can be turned into electricity using photovoltaics (wherein solar panels produce electric currents when exposed to sunlight). Indirectly, one uses concentrated solar power (wherein the light is concentrated into a specific area to produce heat, which in turn is used to produce electricity).

It goes without saying that solar energy has several uses-from using natural sunlight as a source of lighting to using solar panels to harness renewable electricity. So is there any question why it is considered to be penultimate when it comes to alternative and renewable energy sources?

Steampunk As a LARP Game?

Steampunk, a term that can be used loosely in terms of fiction, has been around since the 1980's.  Remember the 2003 film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?  This film literally popularized the steampunk genre.  It is listed a sub-genre of fantasy and exploratory fiction.  While steampunk can be found in any genre, whether it be historical, futuristic, or goth, often the era that steampunk is often used in would be the 19th century, or the Victorian era.  The predominant theme would be science fiction or fantasy, where fictional technological inventions would be created and used.

Basically, steampunk can include any previous or recent science fiction that has taken place within our culture.  For instance, it can revolve around the era when electricity had yet to be created and the emphasis was placed on steam or spring gadgets.  It revolves around an era when a mad scientist could be found in his dark laboratory creating anything and everything imaginable.

Today, steampunk is not only a literary genre, but it is becoming a cultural lifestyle.  While there are no rules or guidelines for steampunk, it is generally followed that it finds its basis in the Victorian age.  This can be seen in the foundations of any gadget, item or article that is labeled as steampunk; whether it is a binocular, a watch, lighting or petticoats and bustles.  Often, anything labeled as steampunk will be accented with a mixture of technological and period accessories.  Even a cellphone can be used as a steampunk object as long as it is modified to look Victorian.

Steampunk is many things; it all depends on the fan.  It has been labeled as an intersection of technology and romance, a genre of fiction, an aesthetic, musical style and an evolving sub-culture. It is a story that draws the reader in until they feel they are the character trying these new inventions for themselves. It is about technology and science. It is about humanity at its basic form, the need to invent, create, tell stories and grow.

Recently a lot of LARP (Live Action Role Play) players have started to create games based on the Steampunk style. Even at Calimacil, LARP Weapon enthusiasts have been asking when they will begin to create a new Steampunk sword style.

When File Transfers Create a Great Taste in Your Mouth

MFT can give you the security and peace of mind that other systems just can't - with solid audit trailing to ensure that the only people accessing your information that should be. You can also ensure that these people understand exactly what you need and when you need it without worrying about lost emails and more - MFT allows the upload and download of files that is seamlessly integrated with email, but doesn't burden the system.

Testing and Production

Once your foodstuffs are sourced, the next step that MFT can help with is testing. Why test in one location when you could test in several, using MFT to upload real-time results, information and more. Got geographically divergent or technologically different areas in your business - it doesn't matter to MFT systems. Each can handle the needs of companies that prize flexibility alongside strength and knowledge of the market and allows them to interact with developments instead of react. And once the recipes have been tested, MFT can ensure that the production schedule is met, and that things are stepped up appropriately. MFT gives the opportunity to support and understand the needs of each area of your business, without bogging your company down in needless technology.

Problem Solving

Managed file transfer can also be used to solve problems, allowing you to offer assurances of quality and support that you might not otherwise have been able to meet - it can allow the agile response to changes in needs, ordering patterns or a loss of supplier with simple ease giving businesses the opportunity to work within the strictures of the modern market while still meeting and exceeding all compliance needs of the food manufacture industry. It's crucial to understand that managed file transfer can even support with the filing of paperwork, allowing companies to concentrate on the content of their documents, not the delivery.

Hybrids Pose Risk Of Pedestrian Accidents For The Blind

Over the past few years, U.S. automakers have struggled with the declining car sales that have accompanied the economic recession. Sales of hybrids, however, have remained strong. Edmunds.com recently reported that hybrid sales experienced their third-best year in 2009 since national records were first taken in 1999. From 2008 to 2009, there was only a 6.8 percent decline in the purchase of hybrids, compared to a 21.4 percent drop for non-hybrid cars. Edmunds cited the introduction of new models, federal tax credits and year-end incentives, and low fuel consumption as factors that contributed to the steady sale of these cars. With so many incentives, hybrids have become the vehicle of choice for many consumers; however, blind pedestrians have expressed concerns about how quiet hybrids are when traveling at low speeds, as their battery-powered engines are difficult to hear.

In response to concerns among the blind community about the safety risks posed by hybrid cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, investigated the incidence of pedestrian and bicyclist accidents involving hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) compared to similar accidents involving internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The source of the accident information for the study derived from police accident reports (PARS), which are stored on State Data Systems. Selecting vehicles based on specific criteria, NHTSA focused on a total of 8,387 HEVs and 559,703 ICE vehicles. The agency examined 77 pedestrian accidents and 48 bicycle accidents involving HEVs and 3,578 pedestrian accidents and 1,862 bicycle accidents involving ICE vehicles.

Most accidents involving either type of vehicle occurred during the day, in clear weather, and on roads located in low-speed zones, according to NHTSA; however, the agency found that the incidence rate was higher for HEVs than for ICE vehicles. In certain situations, the HEV was twice more likely to be involved in a pedestrian accident than the ICE vehicle: when the vehicle was slowing or stopping, moving in reverse, or entering or exiting a parking space. "Pedestrian accidents also occurred at a higher rate for HEVs in situations in which the vehicle was turning", explains Jim Ballidis, a California personal injury lawyer.

Last April, NHTSA conducted a study called "Quieter Cars and the Safety of Blind Pedestrians: Phase I," in which the agency studied the reaction of blind subjects to the sounds made by HEVs compared to ICE vehicles traveling at various speeds and executing different maneuvers. Overall, the sound levels of HEVs proved to be lower than ICE vehicles. Some subjects were unable to hear the HEVs at all: two could not hear a Toyota Prius approaching at 6 mph, five could not detect one or more of the HEVs backing out, and eight could not detect slowing vehicles.

Consumers can expect hybrid and electric vehicles to be much louder in the future. In January 2011, President Obama signed the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2010, which will require NHTSA to establish performance requirements for automakers to ensure that blind pedestrians can hear these vehicles. Representatives of the American Council of the Blind and the National Federation of the Blind responded with approval.

Why Use a Personal Trainer

When it comes to hiring a personal trainer, it is often perceived as an expensive decision. After all, the cost of hiring a fitness professional can be quite high. However, the benefits may far outweigh the cost issue if you can afford it and even make it cheaper by getting a few friends together to use a fitness trainer at the same time. The following are the 5 reasons why you should use a trainer if you can afford one.

Motivation

The truth is most people are just not motivated to exercise on their own and kept putting off exercise session or putting in too little effort to make it effective. The chances of you turning up for an exercise session and putting in your best effort is a lot higher when you are scheduled in for a session of training with a highly motivated personal trainer.

Knowledge

Very often, many exercisers do not know how to exercise and have no idea what they should do for their fitness goals. The worse thing is they end up injuring themselves other than wasting their time figuring out what they should be doing. With a well-trained fitness professional, you simply cannot go wrong. He will ensure that you are exercising the right way, lifting with the best technique and customizing the programme for you. There is simply no re-inventing the wheel. The last thing you want to do is to do your own research and find out what are the types of program your should be doing.

Accountability

With a personal trainer, he will ensure that you are putting in the best effort in your training sessions to ensure the best results for you. He may even ensure that you correct your diet and call you up and follow up on your progress. The problem with exercising on your own is there is very little accountability and discipline to eat well and push hard enough in a workout session to gain the maximum benefits.

Results

Obviously, no one is going to pay anybody for not delivering the results they want. With a personal trainer, you are more likely to achieve success because of the expert guidance and accountability that you get.

Health & Fitness

Most important of all, you achieve the best health and fitness that money cannot buy. If you can afford a well-trained personal trainer that can deliver results to you, your health and fitness, there is no reasons why you should not consult a personal trainer for his expertise. After all, what could be more important than you and your health?

Accommodation Reservation Software - Use It, Or Lose Business!

If you don't have some kind of accommodation reservation software or online room booking system in place, it's quite simply costing you money. Not so long ago it might have been an expensive choice for the small bed and breakfast business or medium guest house or hotel. Today, the only question is how much cash are losing if you don't have it!

There are probably a few owners out there who would argue. They would say that they get plenty of customers phone them up. They have a website, it's got their telephone number on it, so why do they need difficult, expensive reservation systems software?

For a few, it might be a reasonable point. Perhaps older businesses with established clients can survive a bit longer without keeping up with modern technology. There are probably a few that don't have websites at all.

But how much longer is that going to work? It's a competitive world. Many guest houses, small hotels and bed & breakfasts - even those that have good websites - are finding the going tough. Look for somewhere to stay online and there's a lot of choice. It's difficult enough to differentiate yourself already - without putting further obstacles in your customers way...

...like not having accommodation reservation software so you can take bookings online!

Look at it another way. Let's say someone finds your place via a search engine. They like the look of it. They decide to check your availability. How? Many people - especially busy business folk - just want to check whether you have a room and book it. Now. This minute. They don't want to phone you and chat. If they want a dull old chain motel, you can bet that will have online booking software. Your business customer can book it via their phone, laptop, digital tablet... however they like.

So why are you putting an obstacle in their way when they want to book your B & B, guest house or family hotel? Isn't it difficult enough to get new business anyway?

The only reasonable argument might be price. Some kinds of room booking program can be thousands of dollars. That's a lot to invest up front. Today though, you don't have to come up with that kind of payment at all. There is easy to learn, flexible accommodation reservation software that you just pay a few dollars per room, per month. It's even hosted and run by the software designers so you don't have to install anything on your computer or maintain an expensive program - just link from your website to theirs. It's the perfect solution for you - and just what your customers have been waiting for!
